Melanie Nelson

Melanie Nelson, Speech Language Pathologist

The 2019-2020 school year marks my 34th year as a licensed Speech Pathologist in the State of Minnesota and my 12th year as a Win-E-Mac Patriot!!  As a Speech Therapist, my job is to assess, diagnose and treat communication disorders in preschool students through high school students.  I complete all assessments and follow due process of the law in order to best serve students in need of improving their communication skills.  I work with parents and teachers to determine the needs of the student and help put a plan for success in place!  Each research-based treatment plan is individualized dependent upon the specific needs of each student and family.  As a Speech Therapist, I have to be resourceful, persistent and adaptable everyday.  I am a strong listener and am confident in my skills as a therapist.

In the field of speech therapy, every day is new and exciting!  Students may be served in one of four specialty areas: Articulation, Expressive and Receptive Language Development, Fluency, and Voice or Vocal Concerns.  Within these disabilities, other areas are also served, such as Autism and Deaf / Hard of Hearing students.
As in the previous 4 years, I am again teaching a Read 180 / System 44 classroom (5th Grade) to improve reading, comprehension, vocabulary and written expression skills for students in need of boosting skills.

In addition to working with students with communication disorders, I am also the District Assessment Coordinator, lining up all Minnesota State-based assessments: NWEA Testing, MAP Testing as well as MCA / MTAS Testing.  I head up our Professional Development Committee and am part of our District Literacy Committee, Leadership Team, Data Team, and Read 180 / System 44 Team.

My passion for teaching and helping students is limitless and I truly believe strongly in public education!
